Should I try mediation? A discussion paper for trade union members

David Bleiman, a full time trade union official, has written a discussion paper for trade union members entitled “Should I try mediation?”

David Bleiman, a full time trade union official, has written a discussion paper for trade union members entitled “Should I try mediation?”    In what is the first introduction to mediation in the UK specifically written from a trade union standpoint, he looks at the range of issues which any employee could be encouraged to consider in order to be able to participate in mediation on the basis of informed consent and with appropriate safeguards.   He goes on to discuss the issues which union reps should raise where mediation is being introduced in a unionised workplace.   Unions are still generally at an early stage in considering mediation in issues affecting individual employees, so David is publishing his guide as a discussion document in the first instance and would welcome comments.  SMN is pleased to publish this innovative insight into mediation from the user’s perspective.  David believes that the growth and effectiveness of employment mediation is likely to be demand-led, as employees and their union reps realise the potential of mediation as a way of resolving individual disputes at work.
