The Scottish Mediation Network are launching a series of CPD events, taking place across Scotland. There is a series of three different events, which will be repeated in Edinburgh, Glasgow, Aberdeen and Ayrshire. You can download a pdf with all the information here, or find the details below.
Session 1: Embracing the Practice Standards, Mentoring Network & Engaging Reluctant Clients
Embracing the Practice Standards
Presentation on the new practice standards and to provide guidance on how to ensure that you can maintain the required level to enter the Scottish Mediation Register.
Mentoring Network
Information on what this is and how to get involved.
Engaging Reluctant Clients
Facilitated discussion covering the difficulties of engaging with reluctant clients. This will provide an opportunity to share and learn techniques and put these into practice through participating and observing role plays.
Learning outcomes
Skill: Improve your ability to engage with reluctant clients
Experience: Role play and observation. How to encourage client participation in mediation
CPD: 2 hours

Session 2: Different Approaches to Mediation & Peer Supervision Triangle Talks
This CPD event will provide an opportunity to discuss the different practice styles adopted in mediation. Mock mediations using case studies will give participants opportunity to explore these practice types and be challenged to adopt different types in mock mediations:
- Facilitative
- Transformative
- Evaluative
- Therapeutic
Triangle Talks
Triangle Talks is where three people come together, using a structure to help each other to talk about their mediation practice. The cases discussed are confidential, and should not be discussed outside the room.
The purpose of the work in Triangle Talks is to give and receive peer group support for on-going problems in your mediation practice. Attention will be given to particular and actual problems. At the same time, skills of listening can be tried out and developed for everyone involved.
Learning Outcomes
Knowledge: Better understanding of the practice types of mediation
Experience: Application of different approaches through role play of case studies
Experience: Peer supervision
CPD: 2.5 hours

Session 3: Additional Tools in Mediation Practice & Mediator Performance Checklist
This CPD event will provide an opportunity to explore the role of additional tools in mediation. It will provide a forum for discussion over the role of technology and visual aids in mediation. Participants will practice the use of additional tools through participating in and observing mock mediations.
There will be a facilitated discussion over the skills required to be a “good mediator”. Participants will be invited to create a checklist for assessing mediator performance. Checklists will be for individual use as an aid to develop and expand on good practice.
Learning Outcomes
Skills: Utilising additional tools in mediation practice
Knowledge: Increase awareness of available tools and the way in which they can be used
CPD: 2.5 hours
