Community mediation in Nepal is set to be on the rise as the method of choice for access to justice.  Following the civil war recent studies have shown that many in the country are living within a legal or governance vacuum more acute than the situation before the conflict.  Formal process through court is very expensive and in most cases far exceeds what is affordable for individuals.  As a result community mediations are being used in a variety of disputes including community, property and irrigation disputes, marital, and increasingly, domestic violence disputes.  There are some concerns about this growing trend despite its advantages.  Many have
expressed doubt that a voluntary service can be sustainable and many have pointed to the dangers of creating a culture of impunity among violent offenders who are not formally charged. Read more here.
