SUMMARY:Workplace Conversion Course
DESCRIPTION:This course will take place over two days and will be based at 18 York Place\, Edinburgh\nThis practical two day course (13 hours of CPD) introduces mediators experienced in other fields to the problem of workplace disagreement and conflict. Participants will learn about the causes of conflicts to watch for\, how to adapt their mediation styles\, the use of written communication and other techniques over two enjoyable\, interactive days with opportunities to practice their newfound skills. \nContent will include: \n\nLegal Context – The 2008 Employment Act has changed the environment for mediation – how does this affect the mediator\, what advantages and drawbacks does it create?\nThe Organisation – How does it respond to conflict?\nHR Managers – Are slowly understanding that mediation could help. As a mediator what approach should we adopt with them?\nThe Disputants – Do managers in a dispute differ from anyone else in conflict – what motivates them\, who advises them\, how important is ‘face’\, and how important is it to follow procedure?\nThe Life of the Dispute – The internal and legal status stages a complaint may go throughbefore it comes to mediation and how this can affect the parties\nWorkplace Conflict – So\, how do workplace conflicts differ from those between neighbours or within families?Transformative or Facilitative – The mediators objectives: what realistic outcomes can be expected from a workplace mediation?\nMediation Format – Many workplace conflicts will have taken years before the mediator is involved. So how might we adapt our mediation styles to cope with long embedded conflict?\nWritten Communication – Many workplace mediations take place over several meetings\, sometimes weeks apart. What sort of written communications between the mediators and the individuals can help the process?\nPractice\, Practice\, Practice – Over two days\, we will use actual case histories as the basis to practice your newfound skills\nDebrief and Evaluation – Final question and answer session and addressing of any outstanding concerns\n\nThis session will be facilitated by award winning freelance mediation trainer Carol Hope and Jeremy Scuse an experienced workplace mediator (see below for Carol and Jeremy’s biography). \nEdinburgh \nMonday 12th and Tuesday 13th December 2016\, 9am – 5pm\nScottish Mediation Network\, 18 York Place\, Edinburgh\, EH1 3EP\nCosts: £300 per attendee for the two days\, including course hand outs\, lunch and refreshments.\n£240 for SMN Members.\n(Organisational members can send up to 2 people at member rates). \nBooking:\nPlease email admin@scottishmediation.org.uk if you would like to attend. \n\nJeremy Scuse Biography\n\n\nI have always been interested in what makes people tick. My career started with a degree in Psychology and then 25 years in senior international marketing\, followed by 10 years setting up my own companies and acting as a Non Executive Director for entrepreneurs. I accredited with CEDR in 2003 and set up Catalyst Mediation in 2005. We have helped people to resolve many different\, commercial\, IPR\, workplace\, estate\, partnership and shareholder disputes. I coach\, lecture law students\, share skills and give demonstrations of communication\, negotiation\, early dispute resolution and mediation to councils\, HR staff\, legal firms\, their clients\, mediators\, in fact anyone I can persuade to sit still for long enough. \n\n\n\n\nCarol Hope Biography\n\n\nCarol Hope is an award winning freelance mediation trainer and supervisor. She was the Director of Family Mediation in Edinburgh for 16 years during which time she developed a number of new services locally and nationally in Scotland. Carol then went on to work for the Scottish Mediation Network for 10 years. Her remit was to develop mediation training and practice for all types of mediation in Scotland. Her 20 years mediation experience spans commercial mediation\, family\, housing\, additional support needs\, equalities\, workplace\, and peer mediation.\nCarol has trained over a thousand children to be peer mediators\, nationally and internationally and was the key note speaker at the second international peer mediation conference in Macedonia.
