She is a Non-Executive Board Member of NHS Lothian\, the Vice-Chair of Midlothian Integration Joint Board and a Trustee of the Edinburgh and Lothians Health Foundation. Carolyn previously worked part-time as a Lecturer in Ombudsman and Complaint Handling Practice at Queen Margaret University. SUMMARY:Peer Mediation Training for Trainers Online 22nd and 29th September 2020
DESCRIPTION:This online Training for Trainers course taking place over two sessions (2 hours each session) and will enable participants to deliver peer mediation training to children and young people aged 10 to 16 years. It will provide tools and techniques that will equip participants to feel confident in training and supporting young people as peer mediators. \nPeer mediation is a technique using a 5-stage model which enables children and young people to help their peers to resolve disagreements in a constructive and non-violent way. Peer mediation training is a fun and interactive programme which can be delivered in a wide variety of different settings including schools\, youth clubs and other settings where young people meet. Research and our experience suggests a hugely positive impact upon young people which can directly impact upon raising attainment. \nThis course would be of particular interest to those working with children and young people who are keen to set up a peer mediation scheme within their setting. SUMMARY:Forgiveness – The Art of Letting Go
DESCRIPTION:Training will take place on both Tuesday 18th August AND Tuesday 25th August from 3pm – 6pm on both dates\, 6 hours total. Participants must be able to attend both sessions. \nMediators are routinely confronted with clients enmeshed in difficult conflict. Rarely is the topic of forgiveness discussed\, yet forgiveness offers an important pathway for enabling clients to let go of the past and move forward in their lives. Without forgiveness\, anger\, resentment and other toxic emotions may continue to fester\, long after the external problem – the lawsuit\, the divorce\, or other dispute – have been resolved\, all to the detriment of our clients’ physical and emotional well-being. Clients need practical solutions\, but they also need peace\, healing\, and closure. Forgiveness provides a vehicle for achieving all of these. \nThis interactive training will provide an overview of the role forgiveness can play in mediation. We will dispel common misconceptions about forgiveness and discuss different types of forgiveness and how each applies to mediation\, obstacles to forgiveness\, when and how to talk to clients about forgiveness\, how to create the conditions for apology and forgiveness\, and much more. \nPresenter\, Eileen Barker\, is an internationally recognised mediator\, facilitator\, forgiveness teacher and coach. She is a leader in the movement to integrate emotional healing and forgiveness in conflict resolution. A litigation lawyer who rejected the traditional adversarial role\, Eileen has focused her practice on mediation and conflict resolution for more than 20 years\, helping thousands of people resolve disputes outside of court. This work led her into a deep exploration of forgiveness as it relates to resolving conflict and making peace\, both with others and oneself. She is a widely published writer and popular speaker who has led numerous trainings on forgiveness. \nThis event is being jointly hosted by Relationships Scotland\, Scottish Mediation and Place for Hope as one of the Year of Mediation 2020 initiatives. \nPlease note: \n\n1. SUMMARY:Virtual Mediation During COVID-19
DESCRIPTION:Many organisations use mediation to help to resolve workplace disputes before they escalate to something more serious. Conflicting parties would normally sit with a trained\, neutral mediator to work out a way forward\, however in a Covid-19 world\, mediation has had to move online. This session will cover how mediation works\, how online mediation is different\, and the challenges and benefits of using online mediation. \nGraham Boyak from Scottish Mediation and Natalie O’Hare\, HR consultant and workplace mediator\, will take you through mediation from pre-meetings through to the five stages of a mediation\, reflecting on what it’s like for everyone involved. \nGraham Boyack\nGraham has been Director of the Scottish Mediation since August 2012. During that period\, he has contributed to policy a member of the Scottish Government Administrative Justice review and Digital justice Working Group. He is a pro-bono mediator with the Edinburgh Sheriff Court Mediation Service. Graham has worked extensively in the third and public sector and brings senior leadership experience\, having worked in Student Unions\, The Festival City Theatres Trust and the Scottish Ambulance Service. He has strong skills in partnership working\, governance\, policy development\, has an MBA and is a Fellow of the Chartered Management Institute. \nNatalie O’Hare\nIn conjunction with being an HR Consultant with BeyondHR\, Natalie carries out workplace mediation and is present on the Scottish Mediation Register. Mediation cases have included dispute resolution in public\, private and third sectors between directors\, peers and managers. SUMMARY:Peer Mediation Training for Trainers Course March 2020
DESCRIPTION:This one-day training\, facilitated by our Peer Mediation Co-ordinator Sarah Welsh (see biography below) along with another experienced trainer\, would be an appropriate course for mediators\, youth and community workers and also teachers and school support workers (primary and secondary) who are motivated to work with young people in this field. No previous experience of delivering peer mediation is required. \nEvent Aims \n\nEquip participants with the knowledge and skills to deliver peer mediation training.\nBuild training capacity and to increase the number of peer mediation trainers in Scotland.\nWork towards the development of validation and standardisation of peer mediation practice and training.\n\nExpectations \nAt the end of this event attendees will be provided with the information required to deliver peer mediation training in schools. Her focus over the past 2 years has been to provide training for young people and adults in the school system and to external support organisations\, who see the benefits of peer mediation for young people and for the school environment. Sarah joined Scottish Mediation in July 2017. She has a background in peer education and training with young people and has project managed in health\, education and third sector organisations. She has practiced as a family\, community\, intergenerational and homeless prevention mediator for many years. Her practice includes family mediation\, supervised contact and support work with children.  Alison’s practice also includes workplace dispute resolution\, mental health training and teen development. Additionally\, she is a qualified social worker and mental health officer along with over 12 year’s experience as a counsellor. \nCharlie Irvine \ncharlie.irvine@strath.ac.uk \nA former solicitor and professional musician\, Charlie started mediating in 1993 when he trained as a family mediator with FMS (now Relationships Scotland). His current practice includes commercial and succession disputes\, workplace conflict and complaints against professionals. In 2010 Charlie founded Strathclyde University’s LLM/MSc in Mediation and Conflict Resolution\, quickly followed by Strathclyde Mediation Clinic. The Clinic combines theory and practice by enabling students to work alongside experienced practitioners\, and provides a free mediation service in six sheriff courts across West Central Scotland. He is also the Mediation and Conflict Resolution Advisor for the Scottish Centre for Conflict Resolution. Andrew is a consultant with Common Ground Mediation\, who provide Additional Support Needs Mediation throughout Scotland. DESCRIPTION:On Friday 28th June 2019 Bringing Mediation into the Mainstream in Civil Justice in Scotland was launched. This report is the result of six months of research by Scottish Mediation overseen by an Expert Group chaired by Alun Thomas and John Sturrock QC. \nThe report proposes a coordinated strategy for ‘normalising’ the use of mediation in the civil justice system. It seeks to build on existing infrastructure to minimise the cost to the public purse and to ensure mediation is embedded as seamlessly as possible. It recognises that there is a need to change the ‘one size fits all’ model of litigation and consider how the use of mediation might be increased. SUMMARY:Peer Mediation Training 4 Trainers Course
DESCRIPTION:Wednesday 28th and Thursday 29th November 2018\, 10am – 4pm \nThis two-day training\, facilitated by our Peer Mediation Co-ordinator (Sarah Welsh\, see biography below) would be an appropriate course for experienced family and community mediators\, experienced youth and community workers and also teachers and school support workers (primary and secondary) who are motivated to work with young people in this field. No previous experience of delivering peer mediation is required. Mediators who have some experience of peer mediation are also welcome. \nEvent Aims \n\nEquip participants with the knowledge and skills to deliver peer mediation training.\nBuild training capacity and to increase the number of peer mediation trainers in Scotland.\nWork towards the development of validation and standardisation of peer mediation practice and training.\n\nExpectations \nAt the end of this two-day event attendees will be provided with the information required to deliver peer mediation training in schools. Participants will be given access to training materials\, resources and information to help create a peer mediation training toolkit. \nContent \n\nWorking in schools and within the school culture\nHistory and background of peer mediation in Scotland\nThe place of peer mediation in a whole school approach to relationships\nSetting up peer mediation: consultancy and preparation\nPeer mediation models\nTraining children and young people: guidelines\, materials and golden rules\nSustaining and maintaining peer mediation\nMonitoring and evaluation\n\nCosts: £300 per attendee for the two days (£240 for Scottish Mediation members)\, including course handouts\, lunch and refreshments. (Organisational members can send up to two people at member rates). \nPease note school staff from within the Peer Mediation project areas (Dundee\, Angus and West Lothian) will be able to attend free of charge. \nSarah Welsh Biography \nSarah’s role as Peer Mediation Coordinator is to support the development of peer mediation in schools and to work towards building a sustainable peer mediation network of good practice that can be rolled out across Scotland. Her focus over the next 2 years will be to provide training for young people and adults in the school system and to external support organisations\, who see the benefits of  peer mediation for young people and for the school environment. Sarah joined Scottish Mediation in July 2017. She has a background in peer education and training with young people and has project managed in health\, education and third sector organisations. She has practiced as a family\, community\, intergenerational and homeless prevention mediator for many years. Currently she is a tutor on the Relationship Scotland\, Certificate in Family Mediation (Accredited) course and delivers additional professional development courses to mediators.

SUMMARY:Mediate 2018 Conference - Widening the Scope
DESCRIPTION:This year’s conference theme is ‘Widening the Scope’. The conference will look at the current scope of mediation. Where is it being used and how is it making an impact? It will look at mediation in action and the different skills being applied in different circumstances. It will also look to the future and\, using the projects being discussed as a starting point\, ask the question of how the scope of mediation could be widened. \nWe have two excellent plenary sessions. \nJo Berry and Patrick Magee are in conversation about Building Bridges for Peace. Building Bridges for Peace advances conflict transformation by facilitating those involved in hostilities to break the cycle of violence and revenge by appreciating the humanity of their opponents and the power of empathy.  Founder Jo Berry and Patrick Magee – who was convicted for the Brighton bombing that killed Jo’s father – facilitate workshops around the world which enable dialogue between opposing groups and give talks on conflict resolution and alternatives to violence. \nAileen O’Brien and  Chris McDonagh from the Traveller Mediation Service (TMS) are presenting a session which will tell us about an exciting and innovative TMS project in Ireland which has trained Travellers themselves to mediate Traveller conflicts. They will also tell us about their pilot peer mediation project which was delivered in an Irish prison where inmates were predominantly from a Traveller background. This offers an interesting new perspective on the use of a peer mediation model which has more often been used in schools. \nOur workshop programme includes; \nSarah Welsh from Scottish Mediation will discuss the Young Talk Peer Mediation Project and consider how things are working and how it could potentially develop in the future. \nAlison Ebbitt will explore mental health in relation to mediation. The workshop will cover: understanding mental health; the impact of stress; and\, behaviour in conflict and how it impacts upon mental health. Alison will also consider situations when mediation would not be appropriate. \nWill Linden\, Co-Deputy Director of the Violence Reduction Unit and Sam Tedcastle\, Senior Practitioner at the Centre for Good Relations will be an explore the potential of mediation to prevent and reduce violence in communities. They will consider two different communities and how they are affected by violence. How does the violence manifest and what is underpinning it? They will then consider what are the mediation roles that could help prevent and reduce violence. \nUsing their new Housing Mediation Project at the University of Strathclyde as the focus for debate\, Charlie Irvine and Carolyn Hirst will deliver a Workshop which considers the mixed feelings about mediation in the resolution of legal and contractual disputes. Drawing on their knowledge and experience of mediation theory and practice\, they will encourage discussion on the structural and ideological barriers to using this form of dispute resolution and what might be needed to improve mediation receptivity. \nDenise Triessman will deliver a workshop looking at self-care for mediators. (Both AM and PM sessions) \nDr Lesley Allport and Roland Chesters will explore the growing development of Disability Mediation as a specialist area of practice. They will discuss the work of the Disability Mediation Working Group\, supported by the College of Mediators and its progress so far and identify the difference between inclusive working and disability mediation. Participants will be invited to consider what it means to be a disability mediator and the issues and challenges that this work raises. \nSam Tedcastle\, Senior Practitioner at the Centre for Good Relations will explore how civic mediation processes can be used to support respectful dialogue across groups with opposing and extreme views. This work will consider where these conversations can build resilience in Scottish communities and encourage participants to reflect on some of the personal dilemmas that may arise when facilitating such a process. \nAnd finally\, the Workplace and Employment Initiative Group (WEIG) will present a session entitled The Influence of Lawyers on Mediation  – the Good\, the Bad and the Ugly\, delivered by Alun Thomas\, Employment Partner at Anderson Strathern. \nPlease click here to fill out a conference feedback form.
