DESCRIPTION:In this masterclass you will learn why forgiveness is in your clients’ self-interest and how they can be helped to forgive. \nHave you had a client who agreed to a negotiated outcome but was still resentful about the initial disagreement or harm? This masterclass is about how these clients can be helped with emotional repair. \nForgiveness is a well-recognised but poorly understood concept. People talk all the time about emotional concepts like resilience or love but forgiveness is seldom talked about. Yet it holds great power for emotional repair after facing difficult circumstances. There are also misconceptions about forgiveness which leads many people to miss out on its rich benefits. \nStephen will explain how harmful resentment is and how forgiveness sets clients free and effortlessly restores their damaged qualities like trust and confidence. Stephen will explain the 13 objections to forgiving and how they can be answered. He will also talk about the optimum timing for recommending forgiveness to clients in the mediation process and the different tools available to help clients forgive. \nStephen Tolfree is an executive coach\, has coached more than 1000 people and is a senior accredited member of EMCC. SUMMARY:Workplace Conversion Course - May 2026
DESCRIPTION:This online practical two day course – Tuesday 26th and Wednesday 27th May 2026 from 9.30 – 17.00 (one hour break each day)\, introduces mediators experienced in other fields to the problem of workplace disagreement and conflict. Participants will learn about the causes of conflicts to watch for\, how to adapt their mediation styles\, \, an innovative method of mediating large groups\, the use of written communication and other techniques over two enjoyable\, interactive days with opportunities to practice their newfound skills. FIOD MHR \nI have always been interested in what makes people tick. My career started with a degree in Psychology and then 25 years in senior international marketing\, followed by 10 years setting up my own companies and acting as a Non Executive Director for entrepreneurs. I accredited as a Mediator with CEDR in 2003 and set up Catalyst Mediation in 2005. We have helped people to resolve many different commercial\, IPR\, workplace\, estate\, partnership and shareholder disputes. I coach\, train\, lecture\, share skills and give demonstrations of communication\, negotiation\, early dispute resolution and mediation to councils\, HR staff\, legal firms\, their clients\, mediators\, in fact anyone I can persuade to sit still for long enough. \nCarol Hope \nCarol Hope is an award winning freelance mediation trainer and supervisor. She was the Director of Family Mediation in Edinburgh for 16 years during which time she developed a number of new services locally and nationally in Scotland. Carol then went on to work for the Scottish Mediation Network for 10 years. Her remit was to develop mediation training and practice for all types of mediation in Scotland. Her\, over 30 years\, mediation experience spans commercial mediation\, family\, housing\, additional support needs\, equalities\, workplace\, and peer mediation. Carol has trained over a thousand children to be peer mediators\, nationally and internationally . She received an award for her “Outstanding achievement and contribution to peer mediation in Scotland.” Carol is a member of the training faculty for both Calm and RICS delivering mediation training nationally and internationally. SUMMARY:Apologies in Mediation
DESCRIPTION:While mediation is often marketed as cheaper and faster than litigation\, most mediators are motivated by wider aspirations. For many of us\, our work holds the promise of more profound resolution\, incorporating elements courts cannot order: explanation\, acknowledgement and apology. But are apologies always helpful? What makes a good apology? And should mediators encourage them? \nAnd what happens when all this takes place in the shadow of the law? Few practitioners are aware that Scotland has its own Apologies Act. In a groundbreaking study of Canadian medical negligence mediation\, Tamara Relis found that 100% of physicians and 0% of their lawyers listed an apology among their mediation aims. The pattern was similar for claimants (88% v 32%). \nThis online (Zoom) masterclass (run by Charlie Irvine) looks at the why and how of apology. We will consider: \n\nThe essential components of an apology (and the “half-apology”)\nTheir moral and emotional implications\nTheir legal implications\nHow and when mediators may play a role\n\nCharlie Irvine Biography: Charlie briefly practised as a solicitor before training as a family mediator and going on to manage Scotland’s largest family mediation service. After gaining his MSc in Conflict Resolution and Mediation Studies from Birkbeck University of London\, Charlie founded University of Strathclyde master’s programme in Mediation and Conflict Resolution in 2010. The Mediation Clinic was launched in 2011\, offering students the opportunity to mediate real-world disputes while providing a service to the local community. SUMMARY:Peer Mediation - Training for Trainers - September 2026
DESCRIPTION:This online course takes place over two sessions (3.5 hours each session) on Wednesday 8th and Thursday 9th September 2026 from 1pm – 4.30pm\, and will enable participants to deliver peer mediation training to children and young people aged 10 to 18 years and support the development of a peer mediation scheme within their setting. \nIt will equip participants to feel confident in training and supporting young people as peer mediators. \n\n\n\nPeer mediation is a technique using a 5-stage model which enables children and young people to help their peers to resolve disagreements in a constructive and non-violent way. \nPeer mediation training is a fun and interactive programme which can be delivered in a wide variety of different settings including schools\, youth clubs and other settings where young people meet. Research and our experience suggests a hugely positive impact upon young people which can directly impact their confidence\, communication and conflict resolution skills. These skills have been proven to raise attainment. \nThis course would be of particular interest to those working with children and young people who are keen to set up a peer mediation scheme within their setting. \nPrevious experience of mediation is not required. \nParticipants will receive a toolkit of materials which will help support their learning and includes games and activities to deliver peer mediation training. \nThis training will be delivered online via Zoom. SUMMARY:The Letting Agent Compliance Programme Module 5 - Introduction to Mediation Techniques
DESCRIPTION:Provided in partnership with Landlord Accreditation Scotland and the Safedeposits Scotland Charitable Trust the aim of this online workshop is to support letting agents in dealing with conflict that can arise during a tenancy. After looking at conflict and how it escalates\, this workshop moves on to demonstrate how skills and techniques used in mediation can help letting agents to effectively manage relationships with their tenants\, and between private landlords and tenants. \nThe session considers how best to manage and resolve conflict with a view to avoiding costly and time-consuming disputes\, tenancies ending prematurely\, deposit disputes\, and cases being referred to the Housing and Property Chamber of the First Tier Tribunal. \nTopics explored in this workshop: \n• Working with conflict\n• Effective communication\n• Introduction to mediation \nAt the end of the workshop\, you will be able to: \n• Understand some of the causes of conflict and how it escalates\n• Use a number of tools used in mediation to resolve conflict\n• Understand the benefits of mediation and how to access it \nFor more information and to book see Landlord Accreditation Scotland courses please click HERE

SUMMARY:Dealing with Difficult Tenants – A Toolkit for Landlords’
DESCRIPTION:Provided in partnership with Landlord Accreditation Scotland and the Safedeposits Scotland Charitable Trust the aim of these online sessions is to support landlords deal with conflict that can arise during a tenancy. \nBeing a landlord requires many skills\, some of which are more straight forward than others. Dealing with difficult situations that can occur during a tenancy is less straightforward and can be a challenge for landlords who are often managing this on their own. We will look at how matters can escalate and examine how skills and techniques used in mediation can be of real help. \nTo cover the topic in full\, we have created two courses each with two sessions. \nThe first course Conflict & Communication helps us recognise why conflict arises and the second Time for Solutions goes on to help us manage conflict that we couldn’t prevent. \nWhilst each course can stand alone\, the second course builds on concepts introduced in the first so we strongly recommend you attend both. \nConflict & Communication \nSession 1: Why tenant issues escalate: Understanding conflict (1 hour)\nUnderstand how conflict can arise and why it can escalate. \nSession 2: Communicating with tenants: Preventing and reducing tension (1 hour)\nFind out how active listening skills can help you avoid conflict or prevent it from escalating and explore the benefits of different types of communications. \nTime for Solutions \nSession 1 Moving past stalemates: What tenants say vs. what they need (1 hour)\nLearn how to use questioning skills to get away from entrenched positions and identify underlying interests and needs. \nSession 2 : Win–Win solutions: Practical problem solving with tenants (1 hour)\nUnderstand how a variety of problem-solving techniques including reframing can help you reach workable solutions. \nHaving completed both courses \, you will be able to:\n• recognise situations where conflict could arise\n• use mediation tools to de-escalate and resolve conflict\n• understand how to access mediation should you need to. \nYou may not be experiencing this situation at present\, but attending will ensure you have the skills needed should it arise in the future. \nFor more information and to book please email us at admin@scottishmediation.org.uk

Equally\, the process of mediation does more than resolve disputes; it influences how parties see one another\, communicate\, and move forward together. This conference explores the dynamic and reciprocal connection between relationships and mediation\, examining how each shapes and transforms the other. \nBringing together mediators\, conflict resolution practitioners\, legal professionals\, academics\, organisational leaders\, and policymakers\, the event will provide a platform for learning\, dialogue\, and innovation. Through keynote presentations\, panel discussions\, interactive workshops\, and case studies\, participants will explore the human dimensions of conflict and the powerful role mediation plays in fostering understanding\, trust\, and constructive engagement. \nThis event offers an opportunity to connect with peers\, share experiences\, and contribute to a deeper understanding of mediation’s role in strengthening relationships and building more collaborative\, resilient communities. \nWe’re not online this year and will be fully focussed on the discussions in the room. DESCRIPTION:Working or serving as a trustee in charities and voluntary organisations can be deeply rewarding—but managing relationships can also be challenging. The passion and commitment people bring to the third sector\, combined with the complex dynamics between employees\, trustees\, volunteers and partners\, can increase the risk of misunderstanding and conflict. Partnership working\, where different values\, cultures and priorities meet\, can further heighten tensions. \nFor over ten years\, Scottish Mediation has supported third sector organisations to manage and resolve conflict constructively\, helping them avoid stressful\, time-consuming and potentially damaging disputes. \nThis three-hour online workshop provides a practical opportunity to explore: \n\nthe common causes of conflict in the third sector and how disputes can escalate\neffective approaches to managing relationships and addressing complaints\nconstructive ways to resolve disagreements before they become entrenched\n\nFacilitated by experienced practitioners from Scottish Mediation\, the session draws on established mediation techniques and also offers clear insight into how mediation works\, when it is most effective\, and how it can support healthier organisational relationships. \nWho should attend?
