Hew R Dundas

Hew Dundas became (in 1998) a full-time International Arbitrator, Mediator and Expert Determiner in Oil & Gas, Energy and general commercial disputes having spent many years in the Oil & Gas industry, including being General Manager Legal, Company Secretary and Group Insurance Manager at Cairn Energy PLC, a large UK oil company.

He is a Chartered Arbitrator (CIArb) and a Panel Arbitrator in England, Scotland, Beijing, Kazakhstan, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Hong Kong, India, Slovenia and the USA and is a member of many leading arbitral institutions.  He is Honorary Vice-President, Scottish Arbitration Centre and Chairman of the Advisory Board of the Chinese European Arbitration Centre (Hamburg) and is also Presidente Honorario, Centro International de Arbitraje e Mediación (Quito).

His arbitrations include ICC, LCIA and SIAC international cases, Nigerian domestic and international cases and also Scottish and English domestic cases;  parties involved have included Governments, State-Operated Enterprises, commercial companies of all sizes from giant multinationals to 1-man bands, private parties and individuals;  recent cases have involved parties from India, Australia, Iraq, Nigeria, USA, Canada, France, Germany, the PRC, UAE, Croatia, Turkey, Russia et al.;

He made significant contributions to the Arbitration (Scotland) Act 2010 and co-authored the definitive book on the Act, the 2nd edition of was published in August 2014.

He is also a mediator (CEDR-Accredited), serving on various mediator panels in the UK and abroad (including Beijing), and is a former Director of Scottish Mediation Network Ltd, the umbrella body for all forms of mediation in Scotland

He writes and publishes widely (including publishing in London, New York, Houston, Hong Kong, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Moscow and Almaty) on UK and international arbitration law and related topics. He also lectures on International Commercial Arbitration Law at Edinburgh, Aberdeen and other Universities.

In 2005 he was elected President of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (approx. 12,000 members in 108+ countries) for calendar 2007.
