SUMMARY:Forgiveness and Emotional Repair
DESCRIPTION:In this masterclass you will learn why forgiveness is in your clients’ self-interest and how they can be helped to forgive. \nHave you had a client who agreed to a negotiated outcome but was still resentful about the initial disagreement or harm? This masterclass is about how these clients can be helped with emotional repair. \nForgiveness is a well-recognised but poorly understood concept. People talk all the time about emotional concepts like resilience or love but forgiveness is seldom talked about. Yet it holds great power for emotional repair after facing difficult circumstances. There are also misconceptions about forgiveness which leads many people to miss out on its rich benefits. \nStephen will explain how harmful resentment is and how forgiveness sets clients free and effortlessly restores their damaged qualities like trust and confidence. Stephen will explain the 13 objections to forgiving and how they can be answered. He will also talk about the optimum timing for recommending forgiveness to clients in the mediation process and the different tools available to help clients forgive. \nStephen Tolfree is an executive coach\, has coached more than 1000 people and is a senior accredited member of EMCC. Stephen specialises in helping people recover from workplace conflict using forgiveness. He does this for a government department and two unions and lectures internationally on the benefits of forgiveness. You can find more about his work in his website https://www.rehabilitate.uk/ \nCost: £40 for members\, £60 for non-members \nTo book this event please click HERE

SUMMARY:Mediating Skills – ACCESS and Active Travel
DESCRIPTION:Issues surrounding access to our countryside and active travel can be emotive\, often involving competing or conflicting interests. At times\, these tensions can escalate into bitter disputes between individuals or organisations\, which may be challenging and difficult to resolve. Such conflicts may stem from single incidents or develop over long-running disagreements. \nFor some years Scottish Mediation has supported both the outdoor access and active travel sectors to manage and resolve conflict constructively\, helping them avoid stressful\, time-consuming and potentially damaging disputes. \nThis three-hour online workshop provides a practical opportunity to explore: \n\nthe common causes of conflict and how disputes can escalate\neffective approaches to managing relationships and addressing complaints\nconstructive ways to resolve disagreements before they become entrenched\n\nFacilitated by experienced practitioners from Scottish Mediation\, the session draws on established mediation techniques and also offers clear insight into how mediation works\, when it is most effective\, and how it can support healthier organisational relationships. \nWho should attend? anyone involved in managing outdoor access or active travel. Attendees can claim 3 hours CPD. \nCost: £40 including handout and certificate \nTo book this event please click HERE

SUMMARY:Peer Mediation Training For Trainers - March 2026
DESCRIPTION:This online course takes place over two sessions (3.5 hours each session) on Monday 16th and Tuesday 17th March 2026 from 1pm – 4.30pm\, and will enable participants to deliver peer mediation training to children and young people aged 10 to 18 years and support the development of a peer mediation scheme within their setting. \nIt will equip participants to feel confident in training and supporting young people as peer mediators. \n\n\n\nPeer mediation is a technique using a 5-stage model which enables children and young people to help their peers to resolve disagreements in a constructive and non-violent way. \nPeer mediation training is a fun and interactive programme which can be delivered in a wide variety of different settings including schools\, youth clubs and other settings where young people meet. Research and our experience suggests a hugely positive impact upon young people which can directly impact their confidence\, communication and conflict resolution skills. These skills have been proven to raise attainment. \nThis course would be of particular interest to those working with children and young people who are keen to set up a peer mediation scheme within their setting. \nPrevious experience of mediation is not required. \nParticipants will receive a toolkit of materials which will help support their learning and includes games and activities to deliver peer mediation training. \nThis training will be delivered online via Zoom. SUMMARY:Managing Relationships in the Third Sector
DESCRIPTION:Working or serving as a trustee in charities and voluntary organisations can be deeply rewarding—but managing relationships can also be challenging. The passion and commitment people bring to the third sector\, combined with the complex dynamics between employees\, trustees\, volunteers and partners\, can increase the risk of misunderstanding and conflict. Partnership working\, where different values\, cultures and priorities meet\, can further heighten tensions. \nFor over ten years\, Scottish Mediation has supported third sector organisations to manage and resolve conflict constructively\, helping them avoid stressful\, time-consuming and potentially damaging disputes. \nThis three-hour online workshop provides a practical opportunity to explore: \n\nthe common causes of conflict in the third sector and how disputes can escalate\neffective approaches to managing relationships and addressing complaints\nconstructive ways to resolve disagreements before they become entrenched\n\nFacilitated by experienced practitioners from Scottish Mediation\, the session draws on established mediation techniques and also offers clear insight into how mediation works\, when it is most effective\, and how it can support healthier organisational relationships. \nWho should attend? SUMMARY:Mediate 2025 - Circles of Connection (Scottish Mediation Annual Conference)
DESCRIPTION:This year’s conference takes places on Wednesday 3rd December at the Greyfriars Charteris Centre in Edinburgh. \nOur theme is Circles of Connection\, and we’ll be looking at how mediation connects to different areas of work and ways of working. \nOur keynote speakers are Suzanne Zeedyk\, Manira Ahmed and Dr Samantha Hardy. We’ll have a range of plenary sessions and workshops and critically an opportunity to connect with others interested in mediation. \nKEYNOTE SPEAKERS: \nSuzanne Zeedyk’s work centres on the science of human connection\, something that is central to mediation. Dr Suzanne Zeedyk is a research scientist based at the University of Dundee\, Scotland\, within the School of Psychology. In 2011\, Suzanne stepped away from a full-time academic post in order to establish an independent training enterprise. Its aim is to help the public understand all that science has discovered about the importance of emotional connection for human health and happiness. Suzanne works throughout the UK and beyond with organisations keen to think more deeply about fostering connection\, compassion and resilience. \nSuzanne’s Session – The dynamics of relationships: How they shape mediation \nEach of us leave infancy having learned key lessons about how relationships work\, both in times of shared joy and in times of conflict.  Unfortunately\, we often don’t realise what those lessons were because they remain in our unconscious\, stored there during our infancy.  Suzanne Zeedyk is currently engaged in efforts to help the public recognise and understand those dynamics. Awareness allows us to make changes if the emotional lessons we experienced turn out to be unhelpful or healthy.  In this talk\, Suzanne will explore how relational dynamics operate within the context of mediation.  It turns out that\, every single day\, mediators are dealing with the forgotten lessons their clients took with them as they left infancy. \nManira Ahmed is a Chief Officer with Public Health Scotland and has recently undertaken a mediation course. She’ll reflect on how her work and mediation. \nDr Samantha Hardy is an Adjunct Associate Professor in the James Cook University (JCU)\, Conflict Management Resolution (CMR) Program and she brings reflections on why mediators should be crafting their professional practice beyond not getting sued or being complained about. \nDon’t miss our early bird ticket offers! SUMMARY:Understanding Coercive Control and Domestic Abuse in Mediation
DESCRIPTION:On 1st April 2019\, the Scottish Government introduced groundbreaking legislation which recognised the devastating effect of non-physical abuse on victims. The Domestic Abuse (Scotland) Act 2018 criminalised “abusive behaviour towards a partner or ex-partner”\, behaviour commonly referred to as Coercive Control. \nCoercive control is a purposeful and sustained pattern of behaviour whereby a partner or ex- partner seeks to use power\, control and coercion over another. Coercive control is a term developed to help us understand domestic abuse as more than incidents of physical abuse. \nThis session will enable Mediators to gain an enhanced understanding of coercive control and domestic abuse\, exploring and highlighting how coercive control is central to domestic abuse during and post separation and designed to exert and maintain dominance and control over an individual through a range of behaviours and tactics. \nThe session will support Mediators to reflect on their understanding\, and current practice\, in working with clients who are experiencing or have experienced domestic abuse. It will enable them to recognise where coercive and controlling behaviour may be present and affecting clients in the mediation process. It will support Mediators to identify how best to respond and put in place strategies for ensuring that Mediation is appropriate and safe for clients and the Mediator. \nLearning Outcomes: \n\nUnderstand coercive control as the central element of domestic abuse and be able to identify how it may present in the tactics and behaviours of perpetrators during and post separation.\nUnderstand the impact of domestic abuse on those who experience such abuse and how it can affect their behaviour and choices.\nUnderstand the impact of domestic abuse on children and how abuse and post separation abuse often involves children\, economic abuse and abuse of process.\nIdentify and develop strategies for safe practice for your clients and you.\n\nCost: £40 for Scottish Mediation members and £60 for non-members. \nThis session will take place on Zoom and a link will be sent out nearer the time. \nTo book this event please click HERE

SUMMARY:Mediate 2023
DESCRIPTION:Join us for our annual conference\, Mediate 2023\, for an opportunity to explore the practice of mediation\, renew connections and make some new ones. \nKeynote Speakers: \nGerry O’Sullivan: \nWorking with the Thoughts of a Mediation Participant: The Context\, Reason\, How and Results \nThere are times when we need to facilitate parties to stay on their track of thinking and travel the journey of their thoughts. But this is often not as simple as we mediators think it is as we are inclined to ask default or habitual questions that are informed by our own thoughts and these may interfere with our client’s train of thought. \n My own default question is/was: ‘And what was that like for you?’! If you developed a default question\, think about what it is? \nThis presentation will cover the communication context in which we mediators work\, the reason for asking mediation questions\, how to do it effectively and why it works. This theory will be illustrated by a brief filmed role play and then tips on how to ask challenging questions safely. \nGerry has 35 years’ experience in conflict and mediation work\, training design and delivery\, and facilitation. She has published a book titled: ‘The Mediator’s Toolkit: Formulating and Asking Questions for Successful Outcomes’ and developed online training materials to accompany it\, including many filmed role play demonstrations. \nGerry delivered Mediators’ Institute of Ireland (MII) accredited Certified Mediation Training for many years. \nFor more information: www.osullivansolutions.ie \nJohn Lande: \nWhy Do You Mediate the Way You Do? \nMediators’ procedures vary widely based on many factors such as their personal histories\, values\, goals\, motivations\, knowledge\, and skills as well as the parties and the cases in their mediations. Mediators develop categories of cases\, parties\, and behavior patterns that lead them to design routine procedures and strategies for dealing with recurring challenges. These may become second nature so that mediators aren’t conscious of them after a while. \nMediators attending this program will be guided through an exercise to become more aware of the factors leading you to mediate as you do. You should bring a laptop or pad of paper so that you will develop an outline of what Prof. Lande calls your “mediation practice system.” The audience will discuss similarities and differences in the factors affecting their mediation procedures and the procedures themselves. \nYou might want to read some of Prof. Lande’s publications before the program. Here’s a link to a series of short blog posts summarizing different parts of his analysis as well as a law review article that integrates them\, Real Mediation Systems to Help Parties and Mediators Achieve Their Goals. \nWorkshops: \nLearning from different ways of assessing a mediators’ competence\nI have been assessed as a family mediator in Scotland for the LSS and in England for the FMC\, as a commercial mediator in Scotland\, as a community mediator in Scotland and New York and as a SEND mediator in England and Scotland. What I have learned and what might be useful to others. \nWorkshop led by Ewan Malcolm\nEwan Malcolm has been Chief Executive of Relate in London North West\, Hertfordshire\, Mid Thames & Buckinghamshire since 2013.\nPreviously\, Ewan practiced as a solicitor and as a mediator. From 1989 to 2002 he was a partner in a Scottish law firm. In 2002 he established Scottish Mediation in Edinburgh and was its Director until 2009 when he moved to London. From 2010-13 he lived in New York City where he ran the Manhattan Civil Court mediation service.\nEwan first trained as a commercial mediator in 1995\, then as a family mediator the following year\, as a community mediator in 1999 and also as an SEN mediator. He holds a Masters degree in Conflict Resolution & Mediation. Ewan has served as Chair of the College of Mediators and was on the Board of the Family Mediation Council.\nEwan was named Mediator of the Year at the Law Awards of Scotland in 2008 and received the 2018 National Mediation Unsung Hero Award. \nKeeping Families Together – A child’s-rights based approach to Mediation.\nCyrenians’ ‘Keeping families together project’ works across Scotland’s four secure units. We offer whole family support and family mediation at what can often be the most challenging period in a family’s life. Join Cyrenians mediation team for this unique event; part workshop and part theatrical experience\, to imagine mediation as an invaluable tool in ensuring children’s rights are met\, no matter the difficulties families are facing.\nWorkshop Led by Alan Jeffrey\nAlan Jeffrey has worked for Cyrenians\, a local charity tackling the ‘causes and consequences of homelessness’ since 2014. Alan has recently completed an MSc in Mediation & Conflict Resolution and is the Senior Mediator for Cyrenians: mediation and support. Alan\, alongside his highly trained and skilled team are dedicated to further developing mediation as a tool for keeping families together\, improving relationships\, and encouraging collaboration. \nEmbedding Inclusion and Intersectionality in Mediation Practice\nThis workshop discusses how intersectionality can inform efforts to achieve greater inclusion in mediation and be used as a powerful tool in conflict analysis. As such\, the workshop explores how facilitators can ensure that diverse identities are recognised in mediation processes\, whilst also examining some of the barriers to increasing diversity amongst trained mediators.\nThe workshop will cover what inclusion and intersectionality mean in the context of mediation practice. Then\, from a practical perspective\, it will look at how dominant approaches and language can influence a sense of inclusion\, and lack thereof\, within mediation processes.\nOverall\, the workshop illustrates how an intersectional perspective can inform a deeper understanding of conflict dynamics and disputes which is attentive to power differentials. Mediators will be encouraged to reflect on how they can embody intersectionality in their practice and build on this perspective to better support parties’ abilities to engage in the mediation process.\nThe workshop is delivered by Dr Maria-Adriana Deiana and Dr Heidi Riley who are co-investigators of the project Talk4Peace.\nThe project explores the role of transformative mediation practices as mechanisms for peacebuilding internationally and on the island of Ireland.\nMaria is a Senior Lecturer in International Relations and the co-director of the Centre for Gender in Politics at Queen’s University Belfast. Her research interests sit at the intersection of feminist international relations\, critical peace and conflict studies\, and border studies. She has published on the everyday\, affect and aesthetics in conflict; on the politics of gender and feminist activism in contexts shaped by armed conflict\, international intervention and peacebuilding\, and on EU border politics\, peace and security. \nHeidi is a Research Fellow in the School of Politics and International Relations\, University College Dublin. Her research straddles multiple areas of peace and conflict scholarship\, including insurgency and ideology\, gender and masculinity\, peace mediation\, and conflict-related trauma. She has published on masculinity in armed groups with a specific focus on Nepal\, UNSCR 1325 on Women Peace and Security\, women in mediation\, and NGO approaches to conflict-related trauma. \nDialogue on the mediation in the time of war\nNext February 24th will be the second year of a full-scale Russian Federation war against Ukraine. As the war is ongoing the discussion on establishing peace takes place in expert circles and at the international level.\nIn order to foster an understanding\, learning and contribution to peace we would like to share where we are now and what perspectives on establishing peace.\nPotential possibilities for negotiation have been lost with the complete escalation of the war. Nor Ukraine is ready to sacrifice its people\, territory and sovereignty\, nor Russia is ready to get back occupied territories and recognize its defeat in Ukraine. There are a lot more dimensions to discuss\, as well as strategies and approaches worth thinking about.\nIt is a turning point in our-story and the future of the XXI century. We feel responsibility for the choice to be made. As Ukrainian citizens and as professionals\, we don’t see any prospects for dialogue with the aggressor and still\, we are optimistic about peace for our country and people.\nAfter the 24th of February 2022\, Ukrainian mediators and facilitators of dialogue released 7 Points On The War And Dialogue. You can get acquainted with it here (https://md.ukma.edu.ua/wp-content/uploads/2022/05/Public_Statement_War_and_Dialogue_Ukraine_ENG.pdf).\nHere you can read the updated Ukraine Peace Appeal https://www.ukrainepeaceappeal2023.info\nDuring the conference\, we would like to welcome you to the discussion around 2 main questions:\n• What mediators have we learned from the full-scale Russian war against Ukraine?\n• What new strategies might help to establish peace for Ukraine and its people?\nWorkshop led by Vitalii Diakov \nAdditional: \nPanel discussion and social gathering at the end of the day. \nWe look forward to welcoming you to our conference! \nAt Scottish Mediation we would not want cost to be a barrier for those who wish to come along\, if this is hindering you from attending\, please contact us at admin@scottishmediation.org.uk. There is also an option to donate towards tickets for others on the ticket page. \nTo book this event please click HERE
