SUMMARY:Shuttle Mediation CPD - Edinburgh
DESCRIPTION:Scottish Mediation and Scottish Community Mediation Centre are delighted to be working in partnership to offer this CPD which will facilitated by Ian McDonough (see biography below). \nShuttle mediation has often been eclipsed by the more familiar technique of face to face mediation. Despite this\, it continues to be a widely-used process in the resolution of disputes\, particularly in the fields of neighbour and commercial mediation. \nWhat results can we reasonably expect from shuttle mediation? What are the similarities and differences between shuttle and face to face work? Are there specific techniques we should be deploying? What are the pitfalls\, and what can mediators do to overcome them? \nThis interactive three-hour session will explore these issues and suggest a possible framework for undertaking shuttle mediation. \nIan McDonough Biography \nIan McDonough is a trainer and consultant specialising in mediation\, restorative practice and conflict resolution. Among the agencies he has recently worked with are Chartered Institute of Housing\, City of Edinburgh Council\, Inspiring Scotland\, Scottish Community Development Centre\, Stirling Council and Strathclyde University. He was Manager of Sacro’s Scottish Community Mediation Centre from 2000-2017. \nIan is a very experienced mediator in a range of community settings. He is a former Chair of Scottish Mediation and Mediation UK\, and is currently a member of the Fitness to Practice Panels of the General Teaching Council of Scotland and Scottish Social Services Council. \nFor booking details please click here

SUMMARY:Masterclass - Motivating Behaviour Change
DESCRIPTION:Masterclass – Motivating Behaviour Change – Techniques for Mediators from Addiction Therapy \nThis workshop run by Jeremy Scuse (Catalyst Mediation – please see biography below) will consider the techniques successfully used by experts in the UK and US to change some of the most ingrained negative behaviour – addictions. \nMotivational Interviewing (MI) has many similarities in tone and approach to mediation and has some excellent questioning techniques and ideas of how to help a client make the decision to change their behaviour – for themselves. It is one of the techniques voted “most useful” in our training courses over the last 2 years. \nMediators will receive notes on the topic before the session and links to the wider subject and have an opportunity to share their own experiences of a client’s intractable behaviour and practice how MI techniques might have offered an alternative approach. \nThis workshop is suitable for new and experienced mediators in any mediation discipline. \nA light lunch will be provided at 1pm.  \nBiography  Jeremy Scuse BSc Hons. SUMMARY:Workplace Conversion Course
DESCRIPTION:This course will take place over two days and will be based at 18 York Place\, Edinburgh\nThis practical two day course (13 hours of CPD) introduces mediators experienced in other fields to the problem of workplace disagreement and conflict. Participants will learn about the causes of conflicts to watch for\, how to adapt their mediation styles\, the use of written communication and other techniques over two enjoyable\, interactive days with opportunities to practice their newfound skills. \nContent will include: \n\nLegal Context – The 2008 Employment Act has changed the environment for mediation – how does this affect the mediator\, what advantages and drawbacks does it create?\nThe Organisation – How does it respond to conflict?\nHR Managers – Are slowly understanding that mediation could help. As a mediator what approach should we adopt with them?\nThe Disputants – Do managers in a dispute differ from anyone else in conflict – what motivates them\, who advises them\, how important is ‘face’\, and how important is it to follow procedure?\nThe Life of the Dispute – The internal and legal status stages a complaint may go throughbefore it comes to mediation and how this can affect the parties\nWorkplace Conflict – So\, how do workplace conflicts differ from those between neighbours or within families?Transformative or Facilitative – The mediators objectives: what realistic outcomes can be expected from a workplace mediation?\nMediation Format – Many workplace conflicts will have taken years before the mediator is involved. So how might we adapt our mediation styles to cope with long embedded conflict?\nWritten Communication – Many workplace mediations take place over several meetings\, sometimes weeks apart. SUMMARY:Temperament in Mediation
DESCRIPTION:These CPD sessions run by Jeremy Scuse (Catalyst Mediation – please see biography below) will consider the implications of the parties’ temperaments for mediators\, some of the associated concepts and whether making parties aware of their “temperament types” might first help them understand more of the background to their disagreements and second point the way to future behaviours. \nMediators will receive notes on the topic before the session and links to undertake their own temperament tests – which they may choose to share or not! \nThey will also have an opportunity to explore their own issues regarding temperament and share and discuss experiences of how it has affected their practice in past cases. \nThis CPD event is suitable for new and experienced mediators in any mediation discipline. \nCosts: £20 SMN Members\, £40 Non-Members\n(Organisational members can send up to 2 people at member rates) \nBring a Friend: SMN members are invited to bring a friend along to any of the above CPD and for your friend to enjoy member rates for the event. If they are subsequently interested in joining the Network there will be discounts available for that too. \nCPD: 3 hours \nBooking: Please email admin@scottishmediation.org.uk specifying when you would like to attend. \nJeremy Scuse BSc Hons.
