Dean Armstrong is an experienced mediator with a particular interest in Additional Support for Learning (ASL), family relationships and supporting people to navigate conflict constructively.
Dean currently works as a Senior Mediator with Resolve: Additional Support for Learning, where he mediates between families, schools, and local authorities across Scotland. Alongside his own mediation practice, he supports the supervision and development of mediators and contributes to training and service development. He is also an accredited Family Mediator and a trainee Couples Counsellor with Relationships Scotland.
Dean’s wider professional background spans education, additional support needs, childhood practice, counselling and family support. He is a General Teaching Council for Scotland (GTCS) registered teacher, with additional registration in Additional Support Needs (3–18), and has extensive experience of working within education and supporting children, young people and families. He is also a qualified counsellor.
This breadth of professional experience informs Dean’s understanding of the complex relationships, emotions and systems that can sit behind conflict. His approach to mediation is person-centred, impartial, and collaborative, creating a respectful space where people can feel heard, explore different perspectives, and work towards practical, mutually acceptable ways forward.
Dean has a particular interest in using mediation at an earlier stage of disagreement, before conflict becomes entrenched, and in its potential to support relationships, communication and collaborative decision-making.
He holds postgraduate qualifications in Mediation and Conflict Resolution, Inclusive Education and Autism, and Counselling and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, alongside postgraduate qualifications in education, leadership and professional practice. Dean is committed to reflective practice, continuing professional development and promoting high-quality mediation practice.
