Equality and Diversity in Mediation – Aberdeen Session

25th October 2017 @ 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm

The CPD sessions will be run by Amanda Heenan and Sam Tedcastle (see biogs below) and will consider Equality and Diversity in Mediation. The key objectives of the session are to:

  • build shared understanding and definitions
  • consider access and inclusion to mediation; what are the barriers and how do we address them?
  • consider non-western conflict resolution models
  • explore case studies and participants experiences

Mediators will have an opportunity to explore their own experiences of mediating with diverse groups and to consider how their own identity may impact on their practice.

This CPD event is suitable for new and experienced mediators in any mediation discipline.

Three separate sessions will take place:

Edinburgh – Tuesday 3rd October 2017, 10am – 1pm, Scottish Mediation, 18 York place edinburgh EH1 3EP

Glasgow – Monday 23rd October 2017, 1pm – 4pm, SCVO Brunswick House, 51 Wilson Street, Glasgow, G1 1UZ

Aberdeen – Wednseday 25th October 2017, 1pm – 4pm, Empire House, 117 Grandholm Drive, Bridge of Don, Aberdeen AB22 8AE (a light lunch will be provided in Aberdeen, curtesy of Epmire HR who are kindly sponsoring the event)

Costs: £25 SMN Members, £50 Non-Members (Organisational members can send up to 2 people at member rates)

Biographies

Amanda Heenan LLM BSc (Honours)

Amanda is an experienced and passionate equality, inclusion and human rights professional. Amanda is also a Trustee with Scottish Mediation, and champions the use of mediation and collaborative ways of resolving conflict.

Amanda has demonstrated an ability to effectively communicate and influence people at all levels to change and improve practice on equalities. Skills development and communication are key to effective implementation of good practice and Amanda has delivered leadership development and staff training sessions to a variety of organisations, including the public, private and third sectors.

Amanda has worked with a range of NHS organisations to not only ensure compliance of the public sector equality duties, but to also embrace best practice on equalities, to realise the benefits to the organisation, staff, patients and the public.

As well as working with public services and private sector organisations on equalities, Amanda has extensive experience in community engagement, supporting people with a wide range of access needs to have their voice heard by public services.

Amanda holds a Law Masters in employment and equality legislation as well as degree in computing and information technology. She is also an advanced Trundler – enjoying the countryside and city on wheels, and enjoys sharing experiences of accessible places to enjoy with others who use wheels to get about.

Sam Tedcastle, Centre for Good Relations

Sam is a mediator and facilitator with 17 years experience of conflict resolution work. She has worked with Mediation Northern Ireland as their Field Manager in England to develop the practice of civic mediation to build resilience in communities affected by racial divisions. In 2006 Sam was a commissioner on the Commission on Integration and Cohesion, which informed national UK Policy on cohesion and immigration matters. More recently Sam has come home to Scotland and for the last four years worked with WWF Celtic Seas Partnership applying civic mediation and stakeholder engagement processes to build transnational, cross-sectoral partnerships in the Celtic Seas. As part of this role she applied civic mediation processes to build relationships with the fishing industry, governments and eNGO’s.
